Why Regular Bioretention Basin Maintenance is Important
In our decades of working on bioretention basins for local city councils, developers and landscapers, we’ve seen what happens if maintenance isn’t kept on top of regularly. Some of the most common problems we see from neglected bioretention basins or stormwater treatments include:
- Clogs and failure caused by sediment, debris and pollutant build-up.
- Pest and mosquito problems caused by stagnant water that’s unable to drain.
- Increased flood risk.
- Death of vegetation.
- Weed infestations.
- Build up of pollution from oil, trash and chemical pollutants washing into the waterway.
There can also be legal and financial penalties for not regularly maintaining bioretention basins on the Sunshine Coast, so it’s important to stay on top of upkeep. If it’s been a while since you have your stormwater treatments checked or maintained, our team can help, including with any potential repairs or rebuilds.
Our Stormwater Maintenance Services
As local specialists in stormwater management systems, we work with local councils and government bodies, developers, landscapers and contractors to keep public and private basins well maintained. This can include:
- Ongoing cleaning, re-planting, maintenance and repairs.
- Management and routine quality control checks.
- 24/7 emergency bioretention basin support.
We can also design, build and repair new and existing bioretention basins throughout South East Queensland, including Brisbane, Logan and the Sunshine Coast.
How Often We Recommend Stormwater Treatment
The number one way to keep your bioretention basins working as they should is to have a regular stormwater treatment maintenance schedule. How often you need to check and have your bioretention basin maintained can vary on where it’s located and time of year, but we generally recommend:
Typically more needed during storm season to check water is draining, there is no debris and weeds are under control.
Two to four times a year, all weeds and hazardous plants should be removed, debris removed, erosion maintained and any structural repairs performed.
Once a year, new mulch should be added, and any stakes or wire should be replaced.
After large storms, it can be beneficial to book in a stormwater treatment check to make sure no erosion, damage or debris has impacted the build.
Our stormwater treatment specialists can create an on-going maintenance schedule to keep your basins in good order year-round. Contact us today to get started.
