Our Story

It started with a tree worth saving

Before the hydromulching rigs and the drones, before the creek rebuilds and the offset plantings, there was a man, a truck and a mature tree that was about to be cleared.

Our founder and CEO, Peter Sands, has spent more than 45 years working with living things that most people walk past without noticing. He spent decades moving plant stock across Queensland, then built and ran a 46-hectare tree farm and nursery with more than 20,000 trees. His specialty was the job others said couldn’t be done: lifting established trees, palms and cycads out of the ground, root ball intact, and giving them a second life somewhere new.

It’s slow, careful work. Each tree is assessed and root-pruned, then lifted, moved and nursed until it takes hold again. Peter knew that a tree that took fifty years to grow can’t be replaced by a seedling and a promise. That belief is the root of everything TEC does today.

From Advanced Tree Relocators to TEC

In 2014, that work grew into Total Environmental Concepts. The idea was simple: environmental work should actually work. It should meet the conditions on paper and still be thriving years after we’ve left the site.

We set out to bring together two things that too often sit apart, hands-on field delivery and sound environmental science. The result is work that’s compliant, but also built to last, even on the most difficult sites.

Peter has over 45 years’ experience across the construction, nursery, landscape and environmental service industries. He has employed 25+ staff and worked with 150 clients as a leading environmental contractor, with particular expertise in the transportation and relocation of large Queensland natives, including bottle trees, Livistona palms, cycads and grass trees.
